 Feng Shui : The Ancient Eastern art of placement
Feng shui (pronounced FUNG SHWAY) isn't an obscure ancient art any more. It's not even a wacky New Age fad. Ever since Donald Trump called upon feng shui consultants, even the most traditional Westerners are buying into the idea that the design of buildings can affect our fates.
The words feng shui means wind/water. Feng shui designers believe that buildings should allow for a positive flow of energy (or chi). The ideas date back at least 3,000 years, yet a growing number of architects and decorators are integrating feng shui ideas with contemporary building design, but architects who incorporate the Eastern philosophy are not guided by intuition alone. The ancient art prescribes lengthy and complex rules that may strike modern homeowners as quirky.
A home that is lacking fundamental Feng Shui design principles can be enough for certain potential home buyers not to buy. Some design “taboos” can be corrected by placing certain objects/furniture to offset its negative ch’i, while other “taboos” cannot be corrected and should be strenuously avoided. Everyone knows that the stairs must not face the front door and that the front door should not form a straight line with the rear door, but did you know that your home should not be built at the end of a dead-end road, round pillars are better than square, ceilings should be high and well-lit, just to name a few.
